Fabric stores offer more than fabrics today!

Fabric stores are seeing more and more quilting enthusiasts looking for fabrics for their quilting projects. In the past, quilts were transformed from worn clothing to a functional blanket for the bed. Historically, the used pieces dictated the final pattern. Now designs are not limited by such considerations. Quilt artists cut and piece "new" fabrics into the final design. Many fabric artists intend their finished product to be art works hung from the wall, and do not design them for practical purposes. And fabric stores are finding that quilters are not limiting their search to traditional cotton fabrics. Fabulous quilts are being made from silks, satins, and wools. Also, companies are carrying hand-painted specialty fabrics for more abstract and contemporary designs. Aesthetics (not practicality) are dictating the selection of fabric pieces. Color-coordinated groupings are suggested, if you shop online.

Not only do fabric stores sell fabrics and notions for your quilt, but they also offer classes. They will help you get started on a project and assist you in completing it. Many items are needed besides fabrics: stuffing, rulers, stencils, rotary cutters, mats, scissors, threads, and other embellishments. Having someone help you is especially important if you are a beginner. If you have signed up for a class, discounts are usually offered by the management. Fabric stores also have a large selection of books and magazines with step-by-step instructions, materials and yardage suggestions, and designs. Subscriptions to online newsletters (some of them free) are available for downloading. Check our "Fabric Stores Resources" section for companies that offer free quilting and craft newsletters online.
